I woke up this morning realizing that it was eight years ago, on a humid and hazy summer morning, that I landed in Belize for the first time, solo. I stayed in San Pedrolike a classic first-timer, snorkeled Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and happily stumbled on a colorful Dia de San Pedro celebration, bursting in Mestizo culture.

Monkey River, in Southern Belize and about 30 minutes by boat from Placencia, is one of Belize’s major rivers. It’s also the name of the village bordering it – with a mostly Creole population. You can cruise down the river to spot birds, crocodiles or howler monkeys. You can also make a stop along the banks and hike into the rainforest for more sightings. Afterwards, stop by the village for a walk and a Belizean lunch.
