Postcard: You Better Belize It

A long July 4 weekend lurking ahead, an itch to travel and a quick look at my United mileage account led me to Belize. It’s my first time in Central America, and I’m loving it.

Three days into my journey, I’ve gone on river safari in the north, snorkeled along the Belize Barrier Reef (second largest reef in the world after Australia’s), hiked the jungle to the sound of howler monkeys and birds, and climbed up a 110-feet high, 2,000 year-old Mayan temple at Lamanai.

Phew! My legs are so sore but I feel very much alive! My camera is on overdrive, as you can imagine. Above is a shot from the climb up the highest Mayan Temple at Lamanai. I’m not sure I could have made it all the way up (or back down) without that rope.

I have a couple of days left based in Ambergris Caye before I head off to stay a few days on the mainland of Belize, in an area that every Belizean has told me is the most beautiful part of the country: Cayo/San Ignacio.

Happy week everyone.
