My Article on Belizean Music on National Geographic’s Intelligent Travel Blog

I’m happy to report that my article, “The Music of Belize,” originally published on the Matador Network, was selected and included this week in National Geographic Intelligent Travel Blog’s “The Radar feature.

Discovering the diverse music of Belize was one of the most unexpected and fun highlights of my three-month journey there, from July through September.

I was lucky to experience several concerts, fairs and carnivals around the country – all part of the pre-celebrations for Belize’s 30th Independence this year.

Article on Matador Nights: The Music of Belize

My latest article for The Matador Network is on the “Music of Belize.”

During my three months here, I discovered and came to love at least five kinds of Belizean music, especially Punta.

All the live concerts I attended in September featured Belizean-only artists, and they had the crowd dancing all night. In just a couple of weeks I found myself singing along with everyone to some of the popular tunes, like the Creole songs “Gumagarugu wata” or “Born deh” by Lord Rahburn and the Punta Rock tune “Aba” by Super G.

Discovering all this new music has been one of the highlights of my trip. For more on Belizean music, including some audio samples, check out my article.
