An unforgettable travel experience? Hiking to and inside Belize’s most famous archeological site – the ATM Cave. Not only is it stunning but it also contains Mayan ceramics, stoneware and human skeleton remains from sacrifices. To get to the cave, we drove about one and a half hour from San Ignacio, and hiked for a good hour through a treacherous rainforest, which included crossing three rivers on foot. We then had to carefully hike through the cave, sometimes swimming through water, and other times watching for “shin breakers” as our guide called them, in addition to other dangerous dips. Oh and we had to do it all over again on the way back. Thank God for our Belizean guide, who protected my SLR in his dry bag and carried it for me when I had to make risky moves! A once-in-a-lifetime experience.
