Last weekend – in the midst of DC Passport Day excitement over on the other side of town on Embassy Row – was also the 2012 DC Flower Mart at the National Cathedral. An event that would probably pass my radar given that I’m so not into the details of plants and flowers – except that I heard Jamaica was the country of honor this year (thanks to a colleague). A special showcase on account of the island’s 50th Anniversary.
Hearing and watching live reggae played on the steps of DC’s National Cathedral? Priceless. Not finding any Jamaican food served anywhere (not even jerk chicken)? Perplexing. I barely consoled myself with small tastings from Grace’s booth – coconut wata and plantain chips. Blue Mountain coffee was flowing too. And there were displays of Jamaican wares, art, pottery, drums, and some flowers… and a flag here and there. Then came the rain. And off I went back to Passport DC to find food – at the Trinidad & Tobago Embassy.
I’ll soon upload more photos from the Flower Mart/Jamaica event, stay tuned.
